Smoking in general is bad. However, smoking outside
or in non-recreational areas, is more harmful because of the secondhand smoke
effects on adults, teenagers or children. The person smoking is being harmed by
the tobacco and harms others like me when I am outside when I inhale the smoke
from the cigarette. Secondhand smoke is dangerous and harmful because it can
cause cancer, death and affects your daily activities outdoors.
Secondhand smoke is harmful and dangerous because it can cause cancer. As a fact, there are over 50 cancer causing chemicals just by secondhand smoke. Those cancers could lead to lungs working improperly, kidney failure, brain disorder, and more harmful side effects caused by the secondhand smoke. Also as a person who likes to do bicycling, I do not want to be around those who are smoking because I do not want to inhale the smoke. I would have a higher risk of having cancer; therefore I’ll never ride and avoid secondhand smoke. Also having these cancers in your body will cause you to do fewer activities that you want to do. Therefore, I am afraid to inhale the secondhand smoke of others because I do not want to get sick. I want to do more bicycling in my life but if I get sick because of secondhand smoke I would be less active. Instead of bicycling I may be in a hospital bed while others are having fun. So I want to remind others that if you’re around people whose smoking to be smart and avoid breathing secondhand smoke when near smokers.
ACT-UP has made my peers and I realize that secondhand smoke is dangerous and harmful by how it could cause you to have cancer that will make you have a higher risk of having lung cancer, brain cancer, and other harmful diseases. From the information ACT-UP has given my peers and me, I feel more educated and aware of the effects of tobacco and avoid using tobacco products. Also, we feel that we have to tell others about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. So an idea I would like to see made possible is to have more no smoking zones in more areas and more handouts information that I could hand to others. Others and I will be able to do bicycling and outdoor activities without worrying about secondhand smoke.
